Google unveils its state-of-the art quantum chip Willow and here is what it means for the Cryptography community!

Google announced, through an academic paperhttps://lnkd.in/g4uWHeXH , and associated blog postshttps://lnkd.in/ewZkn5Br that there is a remarkable advance in Quantum computing.

🔎 So what does it mean for the security community?
A detailed assessment of attack complexity in https://lnkd.in/gw86ixeu gives us some estimations – it takes 20 million noisy qubits to factor 2048-bit RSA integers within 8 hours. The numbers include multiple details, such as, physical gate error rate, logical to physical qubit ratio, and various other sources of error that Quantum computers are known to be susceptible of. In fact, errors in Quantum computers are long debated to be the primary obstacle against scalable Quantum computers.

👣 Well, where do we stand with the latest hashtag#Google development?
Google showed that their latest Quantum computer can correct all these hardware errors by adopting Quantum Error Correction Codes. Moreover, this gets better with larger arrays of qubits (analog of classical bits). This clearly shows that building large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer is just a matter of time. This also re-emphasizes the demonstration from IBM earlier this year https://lnkd.in/gE6xh-2g .

The other claim about benchmark computation to beat the fastest supercomputers – this is, however, unlinked to any practical utility-scale application right now. So, no, AI is not going to get a Quantum boost, through hashtag#Willow, yet.

For security researchers, the most important takeaway is that we can expect steady stream of news on increasing qubit count, and larger circuits being deployed - essentially an engineering race with fast moving timeline - https://lnkd.in/gYgb7jTN .

In a nutshell, Quantum computing lands in superhighway, threat is real - migration to Quantum safety needs to begin now!
